The World
An art project about Beijing, China in the time just before the Tiananmen Square massacre on June 4, 1989. “2388: Connecting Vocabularies” recreates the seventeenth century French court painting series "Seven Arts and Seven Virtues" by Sebastien Bourdon, in a post-modern format.

The museum scale art project consists of fourteen paintings - Seven Arts and Seven
Virtues -
each measuring 106" by 20", twelve poetry panels, each 22"x20", an Artist's Book - Stefan Umærus' diary and poetry from Beijing, 1989 - 1" x 8", and a video-loop.

First shown at the New York Academy of Sciences in 1992, “2388: Connecting Vocabularies” has also been shown at the Brauer Museum of Art, Indiana, USA, and at the Museo de Arte Moderno, Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic.

Based on Stefan Umærus' personal experience as a language student in Beijing 1988/89, “2388: Connecting Vocabularies” is an art project by Chely Depablos and Stefan Umærus. More >>>

The installation consists of three egg-tempera paintings on panel, with details in silver leaf, each 27"x21", and twelve small panels, each 7"x 7" forming a circle.

A digital print portfolio with twenty poems and twenty digital images measuring 23"x17" concludes “First Aid Kit” .

First exhibited at La Galería, Altos de Chavón, in 1989, “Primeros Auxilios”, was shown at the Casa Simón Bolívar in La Habana in the exhibition “Transparencias” in the year 2000, and at the Museo de Arte Moderno in Santo Domingo the same year.

The exhibitions in Santo Domingo and in La Habana were sponsored by the International Program, Moderna Muséet, Stockholm, Sweden. More >>>

The four paintings in the series,"The Anatomic Theatre/The World", were originally created, on invitation from an NGO, as a proposal for a Global Pavilion for the 50th Anniversary of the United Nations, in New York.

One of the paintings was part of the exhibition “A Tribute to Ingmar Bergman”, organized by the American Scandinavian Society, the same year: 1995.

One of the paintings in the series; “The Anatomic Theatre/The World”, is in the permanent collection of the Museo de Arte Moderno, Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic, and was part of the exhibition "Obras de otras Tierras" at the museum in 2005.

Geraldina Whaley-Ewers presents and represents the work of Stefan Umærus in Atlanta, Georgia, and the Besharat Gallery in Atlanta shows the paintings as part of the exhibition program. Three paintings from the series "The Anatomic Theatre/The World" are currently shown at the Peters Street Projects in Atlanta. More >>>
